In a recent decision, the Everett City Council voted 5-2 to extend the ‘No Sit, No Lie’ ordinance through December 31, 2027. This ordinance prohibits individuals from sitting, sleeping, or lying down on sidewalks within designated buffer zones, aiming to address public safety concerns and connect those in need with services.
The buffer zones currently encompass areas around the Everett Gospel Mission Congregate Shelter, Imagine Children’s Museum, Compass Health Permanent Supportive Housing, and the former Fred Meyer on Evergreen Way. The ordinance also requires individuals distributing goods within these zones to obtain a city license.
Supporters of the extension, including Councilmembers Scott Bader, Mary Fosse, Judy Tuohy, Ben Zarlingo, and Don Schwab, believe the ordinance has positively impacted public safety and community well-being. However, Councilmembers Liz Vogeli and Paula Rhyne opposed the extension, expressing concerns about its effectiveness and potential displacement of vulnerable populations.
As Everett continues to navigate challenges related to homelessness and public safety, the extension of the ‘No Sit, No Lie’ ordinance reflects the city’s ongoing efforts to balance enforcement with support services for its residents.
